sorprendido “ ¿ la has probado alguna
vez?”.
Me explicó
Yo me sorprendí.
Me
eché a reír.
quería llegar a nuestro arco.
SYRIA, FOOTBALL, YERBA MATE AND FRIENDS
SYRIA, FOOTBALL, YERBA MATE AND FRIENDS
Abdullatif is a
medical colleague who came from Aleppo, Syria a few years ago. His land is at
war, the health system devastated ... so he decided to look for a new destiny
in Europe. His family lives in Stockholm (his wife and two daughters), but he
has come to work in southern Sweden, in order to get permission in their
specialty, ophthalmology.
We met in a course
of research we are doing. Our common goal is to obtain the recognition of our
medical specialties in the European Union.
We talked a
Little during the course’s breaks and we found that we share interest in football, and as my most loved city (outside
from Argentina) is Barcelona, I also found out that he loves the Futbol Club
Barcelona and specially one of its players: Lionel (Lío) Messi.
During the
beginning of The World Cup Brazil 2014 both Abdullatif and me have been busy
with our work. In spite of that, we could always maintain contact and tried to
meet to see a soccer match together. It had not been possible until yesterday
July 1, 2014, when Argentina’s team played
against the Swiss football team for quarter finals.
I invited him and
he said he would try to come to watch the game, but there was a long list of
patients waiting.
I’m far away
from my country, so I use technology for being closer to my affections,
and on special occasions like this the magic of the internet connects me with
to my dearest people, my brothers, my parents, my cousins, my friends, Eduardo
in Barcelona, Lucas in Madrid, Miguel in Buenos Aires, Bernat in Chester (England),
Conrado in Ireland, Oscarcito in Tortosa (Catalonia). I don’t feel alone, in my passion for soccer.
And this time I expected
my friend Abdullatif to come for watching the game too. We had talked a little
about the sad history of Syria and its civil war, and the departure of so many
people because of the war. People looking for better living conditions, away from violence.
Now it was time to try to avoid feeling nostalgic by watching a good football
game and celebrate.
I prepared
everything for the “previa” (the time in which argentinians wait for the
“show”). I put my Argentina’s team T-shirt, and started connection via SMS with all my
friends. We were finally a very large international crowd that was commenting
and discussing the prospects of the match, all of us great philosophers of
football, (even those who don’t know so much about the sport).
The match started.
The referee (a Swede named Jonas Andersson) gave the starting sound and I was
anxious, (even having run a mile before the the match in order to try to be a
bit more relaxed).
Abdullatif
arrived just in time, the party was still 0 - 0. Argentina were playing better
than Switzerland, but they offered brave resistance!.
The first half of
the match finished. I had offered my friend a few snacks and a beer, but he only
accepted water. I asked if I could offer something more to drink. "Tea would be nice," said
Abdullatif. "What kind of tea do you
want?" I asked "I have
green tea, jasmin, sweet Chai tea, lemon
tea."
Then he saw a
pack of Yerba mate that I usually have in the kitchen. "Is it yerba mate!?" He exclaimed. "have you ever tried it?" I asked with surprise. "! Sure," he said: "In
Syria it is very popular, especially in the more coastal cities, like the city
of Lattakia!. Also in neighboring countries such as Lebanon”.
Abdullatif explained
me that the last time he had been drinking mate had been like 10 years ago. I
was surprised. I'm from the northern región of Argentina, where the yerba mate
is locally and massively produced, and I
knew that in some countries of the world had been a kind of "fashion"
with the mate, but I thought that the yerba was exported mostly for the
consumption by argentinians or latin american natives living abroad.
For me, it was a delightful
time feeling at home drinking mate with my syrian friend, while watching the
game of my country’s football soccer selection… what more could I ask for? I
asked Abdullatif. And he said, "well…Maybe
that I go for Argentina?". I laughed.
Between mate and
mate (we were just at halftime), he told me about memories of his childhood. It
was 1986 and he was 6. His whole family, in Alepo, were living the excitement
of seeing once again a world football cup. The whole country was amazed with
the best teams of the world, but there was a particular one that had captivated
the eyes of his country, and Abdullatif’s father talked about a player, Diego
Maradona. "he was a magician." With his child's eyes he remember the
hypnotic effect of those dribbles that Diego did in every game… poetry coming
out of his feet, and how the whole family stood up every time Argentina reached
the goal in that historic fought final against Germany, and how his family
there in Alepo celebrated the argentinian victory in that final match in which
Argentina reached the world Championship 1986 ".
I was surprised.
ie, not surprised, but surprised. Here we were, waiting for the second halftime.
In the second part of the match one player, one such Shaquiri, Swiss striker
who had scored three goals in their last match against Honduras, was trying to
cause problems and the swiss artillery wanted to reach a goal. I was nervous,
upset ... the Argentinian team wasn’t scoring!
The point is that
“Lío” was having hard to score. He got a couple of balls to throw, but the Swiss goalkeeper Benaglio, managed to
save the post. causing more suffering, with no goals after 94 minutes, the
match continued to overtime.
I was sending frantic
text messages to family and friends, drinking mate with Abdullatif and waiting.
But Abdullatif told me "take it easy,
look the way in which Mascherano is organizing the defense!. In addition to
that Argentina has the better football player! (referred to Messi). The funnies
thing is that this guy (for Shaquiri the Swiss striker) is called the 'Messi of
the alps!' "; and laughed.
About the end of the second half of the overtime,
it was precisely Messi who launched an offensive action facing the center of
the court. He made a pass to the right where it was coming Angel Di Maria, who
with a powerful left kick hit the second post in a cross shot to the despair of
goalkeeper Benaglio, who saw who the ball came in in a beautiful goal.
118 minutes of the game and despite his
exhaustion, Angelito Di Maria had scored. He not only left breathless the opponent,
but also the entire Argentina, who shouted a 'Gooooooooooooooooooooool
"born from deep of its chest. I was hoarse shouting, pushing the Argentina
shirt in my fists, and reflexively embracing Abdullatif. Just a few more
minutes and the game ended. The Swiss soccer team would go back home. Argentina
went on to the quarterfinals.
It was a great
day. I was not alone in my football dream. All my friends, fans of the
Argentinian team, were there. And I was
honored to share it with one more friend, Abdullatif, who participated as one
more aregntinian supporter.
The night falled
in this small town in southern Sweden, and I was delighted with the joy of
victory thanks to the program on international television Telesur commented by Diego
Maradona and Victor Hugo Morales, two of my biggest idols, football player,
philosophy thinkers and sports journalists.
No matter how far
we were from our country (in the case of Abdullatif, he is not only physically
far from Syria… Syria will never be the same after this war), although the
distanc. Family, friends, football and Mate made us not to feel alone.
It is like the
song "De Zurda" by Gustavo Santaolalla says: "The whole world is
round; exactly like a soccer ball. "
